TEASER FOR THE 5 BOROUGH ROLL VIDEO
Recently in Hoboken we held SRC 50. Number 50 was big for us, and we planned on doing something big not just at the event, but before it as well! At Secret Roll Club, we like to create, innovate, and push the limits.
We did something new last Sunday by hosting our first Queens of SRC, our Women’s only open mat. It was challenging, as it was also our first event outside of NYC, as well as our first time having 2 sessions back to back. Right after the ladies, we had the SRC 50 open mat where almost 60 people were rolling to our live DJ. A lot of work went into the event - planning, coordinating between ambassadors, volunteers, Hoboken Jiu-Jitsu, and sponsors.
Sunday morning we were all up at 7:30am so we could be in Hoboken by 9am (2 hours early) and get everything set for the community before they showed up for SRC to roll and have a good time! Sunday was packed with awesome people, awesome music, and awesome rolls. For us, though, Saturday was even more packed.
Muhajir flew in from California on Friday night to help us film the weekend, landed early Saturday morning (6am) and then met up with Erik in Brooklyn at the High School where Erik teaches at around 10am. Recently, we started our SRC Youth program with Erik at his school, where he teaches young adults about the gentle art, as well as the importance of discipline, self-defense, health, and fitness.
ERIK & MUHAJIR TEACHING @ SRC YOUTH PROGRAM
Erik was very excited to bring another Secret Roll Club member in as a guest instructor, and Muhajir was happy to revisit teaching again, especially with teens, as he hasn’t been an instructor in a while. They also set up some cameras to capture the moment, and we’ll be releasing a video on our YouTube Channel with more information on the program soon.
At 11:30, once the class was over, everyone packed up as Erik & Muhajir rolled up some of the mats, and went outside to meet up with another Secret Roll Club member (identity will remain anonymous.) The plan was to fit the mats in his car, but of course the mats didn’t fit, so the Ambassadors had to resort to Plan B. There was no Plan B, so they called an Uber.
The Uber driver didn’t know what was going on, or what those giant rolls of mats were, so he drove off. After hailing 2 or 3 cabs, all of whom drove away not wanting to be bothered, Erik & Muhajir finally convinced one Taxi to fold down his seats and fit the mats in the trunk. They dropped off the mats at Erik’s house, then hustled over to Masterskya at 12pm, where they met up with PJ, trained, and filmed the second SRC Sessions video (coming soon!)
FILMING @ MASTERSKYA ERIK // ON THE WAY TO ROLL
They left Masterskya around 3pm, all of them splitting up to go run personal errands. At 8pm, Muhajir met back up with Erik at Erik’s place, where they picked up the mats, and headed to the Hoyt-Schermerhorn train station, where they met up with PJ and Matt (newest SRC Ambassador)! After deciding that the train station they were in probably wasn’t the best idea (there is a police station inside), they hopped on the train (mats in hand) to another train station and began a 5 hour jiu-jitsu project. 1 Night. 5 Boroughs. All Jiu-Jitsu. THE 5 BOROUGH ROLL.
ROLLING & FILMING: YANKEE STADIUM STATION
They dropped mats, rolled in that train station, and proceeded to take the train through every borough, stop at one station in each, and drop mats to roll jiu-jitsu. At some point in Manhattan, Erik & PJ went home, replaced by Gabe & Pauly (2 more new SRC Ambassadors!) who kept the project going until 3am! That’s what our Saturday looked like. Then we were up at 7am for SRC 50 on Sunday!
ROLLING WITH A GOPRO @ UNION SQ.
Of course we filmed the whole thing, and we’ll be dropping the full video soon, so make sure you’re subscribed on our YouTube Channel!
